What causes hard water stains
Much of southwest Montana has hard water, with a lot of dissolved minerals. When that water dries on glass, the minerals stay behind as white spots and cloudy streaks. Sprinklers that hit lower windows are the most common cause, but snowmelt dripping from rooflines, roof runoff, hot tub splash and well water used for washing all leave the same kind of deposits.
Regular window cleaning removes dirt and film, but mineral deposits bond to the glass. Left alone, they build up layer by layer and can become very hard to remove. The sooner they're treated, the better the result is likely to be.
How we remove hard water stains
We start with a close look at the glass. Light spotting often comes off with careful hand cleaning and a mineral-dissolving cleaner. Heavier buildup takes more work: we use products and fine tools made for glass, working by hand in small sections and checking as we go. We clean by hand from ladders, and we don't use water-fed poles.
Some stains are too old or too deep to remove completely, and some glass has coatings or tints that limit what can be used safely. We'll test a small area first and tell you honestly what we think is possible before doing the whole window. We won't promise a result we can't deliver.
Preventing new stains
The best fix is keeping minerals off the glass. Adjusting sprinkler heads so they don't spray the house makes a big difference. Clean gutters keep roof water from spilling down windows, and clearing snow and ice buildup near rooflines reduces drips. Regular window cleaning also helps, because fresh spots are much easier to remove than old ones.
Ask about pairing hard water treatment with our gutter cleaning or regular window cleaning.
Common questions
Can all hard water stains be removed?
Not always. Light and recent stains usually come off well. Old, heavy buildup can etch glass, and some of that damage can't be reversed. We test first and tell you what we see.
Is it safe for my windows?
We use methods made for glass and work by hand. If your windows have special coatings or tints, let us know, and we'll adjust or tell you if we shouldn't treat them.
Can you clean shower doors?
Tell us what you have in mind when you request an estimate and we'll let you know whether it's something we can help with.
How do I keep stains from coming back?
Keep sprinklers off the glass, keep gutters clear and schedule regular window cleaning so new spots don't have time to build up.
How a visit works
It starts with your request. Tell us about the property, what you want done and any timing that matters, and we'll follow up with an estimate. On the day of the work, our crew goes over the plan with you or follows the notes you've given us, then gets to work. We set ladders carefully around landscaping and decks, take care around finishes inside the home, and check the work before we leave. If anything comes up that's outside what we do, or that we can't reach safely, we'll tell you plainly rather than guess. When we're done, we clean up after ourselves.
Why Pane'N The Glass
Pane'N The Glass has focused on careful, hands-on work since 2005. We keep it simple: explain what we're going to do, do it carefully by hand, and tell you honestly about anything we can't do. Our crews clean windows by hand from ladders, and we don't use water-fed poles. Many customers start with one service and add others, like windows, gutters, pressure washing or Christmas lights, so their property stays in good shape through Montana's long winters and busy summers.
